Tips to Select the Right Rug to Match Your Furniture and Decor

Sep 21, 2022

A rug is not just a floor covering but also an essential element in your interior design. The right rug can add color, texture, and style to your room. The carpet can also make a small room look larger or make a large room look more intimate.

But to enjoy these perks, you should choose the right rug that matches your furniture and decor. Explore some tips to help you make the correct choices.

Pay Attention to Colors and Patterns

The color of the rug can determine the mood and atmosphere of the room. For example, if you want a calm and relaxed space, consider a rug with muted colors such as green, blue, or purple. On the other hand, if you want a vibrant and energetic space, go for a carpet with brighter colors such as red or orange.

The color of the rug also affects the perceived size of the room. Light colors make a room look larger, while dark colors make it look smaller.

In addition to colors, the patterns on the rug can also create different visual effects. For example, large and bold patterns may make a small room look busy and cluttered, while small and subtle patterns can make a large room look more spacious. You may blend the rug with your existing furniture and decor or make it a focal point in the room.

Consider the Material of the Rug

Different materials have different textures and durability. For example, wool rugs are soft and have a luxurious feel, but they are also more expensive. On the other hand, polypropylene rugs are less expensive but may not be as durable as wool rugs.

The rug's material also determines how easy the rug is to clean and maintain. Rugs with natural fibers such as wool can be difficult to clean because they are prone to staining. On the other hand, synthetic materials such as polypropylene are easier to clean and maintain. You must decide what is more important to you — comfort, style, or durability.

Determine the Size of the Rug

The rug size should be in proportion to the size of the room and furniture. For example, if you have a small living room, you may want to choose a smaller rug so that the carpet doesn't overwhelm the space. If you have a large living room, you can choose a bigger rug and use the rug as a focal point in the room. You can also put multiple rugs in different areas to create different zones in the room.

Consider the size of the furniture as well. For example, if you have a large sofa, you may want to choose a bigger rug so that the furniture doesn’t float in the middle of the room. In the same way, if you need a rug for your dining area, ensure that the carpet is big enough for all the chairs to fit on when they are pulled out. Leave enough space around the rug so people can walk comfortably.

Select the Right Pile Height

The pile height is the thickness of the rug. This feature dictates the comfort and durability of the rug. Low-pile rugs are thinner and have a more subtle look, while high-pile rugs are thicker and have a more luxurious feel.

Low-pile rugs are easier to clean because they don't trap as much dirt and dust. The rugs are also more comfortable for walking barefoot. On the other hand, high-pile rugs are more difficult to clean, but they are softer and more comfortable to walk on.

The tips above can streamline your search for a carpet that will improve your space's look and meet your comfort and durability needs.
